1987 — Kentville, Nova Scotia

Out over the Atlantic, it was an active season with eleven named storms - one even reaching major hurricane status - but none made their way to Atlantic Canada.

Here in Kentville, the drama came in the form of snow. Over the year, 415.0 cm fell, with January leading the charge at 133.6 cm. The biggest storm of the year arrived on January 31, blanketing the town with 38 cm in a single day.

Rain was steady through the rest of the seasons, totalling 764.3 mm for the year. September brought the most at 132.6 mm, followed closely by November’s 125.4 mm. The heaviest rainfall came later, on December 11, when 48.0 mm fell in one day.

The summer heat peaked on August 18, when temperatures reached 33.5ºC, while winter’s coldest morning came on January 29 at –20.5ºC. By year’s end, the average temperature settled at 6.9ºC - a calm middle ground I’ve captured with my jade yarn.
