1989 — Kentville, Nova Scotia
The Atlantic saw another active hurricane season with twenty named storms, though only one - Tropical Storm Dean - reached Atlantic Canada. Here in Kentville, the weather stayed closer to home: familiar patterns of rain, snow, and shifting seasonal temperatures shaped the year.
Rainfall totalled 882.0 mm. November was the wettest month at 128.0 mm, with September close behind at 120.6 mm. The heaviest rainfall in a single day fell on June 8 with 37.0 mm, followed closely by 36.4 mm on May 6.
Snowfall reached 296.8 cm over the year. February saw the most with 83.9 cm, while the biggest single snowfall event arrived earlier in the season - 25.4 cm on November 23.
Summer found its stride in August, which averaged 25.4ºC. The hottest day of the year landed on July 26 at 32.5ºC. Winter settled in firmly by December, the coldest month at –12.0ºC, with stretches of deep cold dipping near or below –21ºC across December, January, February, and March.
By year’s end, the average temperature balanced out to 6.7ºC - a cool, steady tone I’ve expressed with the jade yarn in this blanket.
