The Weather Journal: October 2026

Welcome to the October Weather Journal!

Each day of the month, I record my weather observations, and track various happenings. I also share a weekly marsh update, which captures the water levels in one of the ponds found in Miners Marsh

Did you know that October is Mi’kmaq History Month in Nova Scotia? It was established in 1993 and invites Nova Scotians to learn more about Mi’kmaq history and culture.

October 1

Daily High: 21.5ºC ‍ Daily Low: 10.3ºC ‍ Avg Temperature: 15.9ºC ‍ Yarn Colour:‍ ‍Yellow ‍ Precipitation: 0.0mm

Forecasted High: 22ºC Weather Outlook: Mainly sunny

Today is Treaty Day, which recognizes the Peace and Friendship Treaties.

Weather-wise, it was a beautiful sunny day. The morning was very foggy and it felt almost haunting. It’s actually been a lot foggier in the mornings and evenings lately! Anyway, the evening was still quite warm, but no fog. The darker nights are very apparent this week!

October 2

Daily High: 26.2ºC ‍ Daily Low: 11.6ºC ‍ Avg Temperature: 18.9ºC ‍ Yarn Colour:‍ ‍Orange ‍ Precipitation: 4.3mm

Forecasted High: 26ºC Weather Outlook: A mix of sun and clouds (up to 5mm of rain this evening)

Today was very unfall-like. It started out quite dark and foggy, and then turned into a sunny, summer day! It was very humid in the afternoon! But, later in the afternoon/early evening it started to cloud over. The rain began a little before 9:00PM. Some would say this is a perfect day, wit a sunny day and rain overnight!

October 3

Daily High: 17.7ºC ‍ Daily Low: 6.1ºC ‍ Average Temperature: 11.9ºC ‍ Yarn Colour:‍ ‍Gold ‍ Precipitation: 0.0mm

Forecasted High: 17ºC Weather Outlook: Sunny

It was a little bit cool this morning, but despite the cooler temperature in the afternoon, it felt a bit roasty toasty! The evening seemed to get dark quickly, and it cooled off a bit. It made for quite a nice day!

Today was also the gallery opening for the Unframed exhibit at the Avon River Heritage Museum!

October 4

Daily High: 18.3ºC ‍ Daily Low: 4.3ºC ‍ Average Temperature: 11.3ºC ‍ Yarn Colour:‍ ‍Gold ‍ Precipitation: 0.0mm

Forecasted High: 18ºC Weather Outlook: Mainly sunny

It was cool this morning at the Marsh, but it was a lovely walk! Zero filter on this photo - look at all those colours! If you look close, you can see that there is water in the pond. This is the most water I’ve seen in some time. IF you really look close, you’ll notice a few ducks, as well! If the ducks have returned, that’s a good sign!

The rest of the day remained sunny. It said there would be some rain later in the evening and overnight, but it hadn’t started when I last looked out just before 9:00pm. It was a cool, but clear evening.

October 5

Daily High: 17.9ºC ‍ Daily Low: 7.8ºC ‍ Average Temperature: 12.8ºC ‍ Yarn Colour:‍ ‍Gold Precipitation: 6.8mm

Forecasted High: 18ºC Weather Outlook: Light rain (~3-5mm)

We definitely received some rain overnight, and that seemed to pick up around 7:30AM. I was surprised by how ‘heavy’ it was! Until about 5:45PM, it seemed to be overcast and rainy or drizzly throughout the day. But at that 5:45 time, the sun burst through the clouds until the sunset shortly after.

October 6

Daily High: 12.4ºC ‍ Daily Low: 6.9ºC ‍ Average Temperature: 9.7ºC ‍ Yarn Colour:‍ ‍Fern ‍ Precipitation: 0.0mm

Forecasted High: 11ºC Weather Outlook: Mainly sunny with a high wind warning

Holy wind, Batman! Walking Carson this morning felt like being out in a tropical storm! But it was sunny despite the wind. At 8:00AM, the wind was 26km/h and gusts were 44km/h. It remained a windy day, with a gorgeous sunny blue sky. Wind gusts in Kentville reached as high as 56km/h!

October 7

Daily High: 15.6ºC ‍ Daily Low: 6.4ºC ‍ Average Temperature: 11.0ºC ‍ Yarn Colour:‍ ‍Gold ‍ Precipitation: 0.0mm

Forecasted High: 14ºC Weather Outlook: Mainly sunny

It was a cold start to the day. Kentville had clear skies at 6:30AM, but it was 8ºC, feeling like 6! It stayed cool for thye most part, but it was certainly warmer than yesterday. The last few days I have really been feeling the darker evenings. Dark by 7pm feels harsh!

Three years ago, the genocide began in Gaza. I’ve spent a lot of time reflecting on this today and leading up to this ‘anniversary.’ The inaction of our leaders is disheartening. Climate justice is social justice. Free Palestine.

October 8

Daily High: 20.2ºC ‍ Daily Low: 7.9ºC ‍ Average Temperature: 14ºC ‍ Yarn Colour:‍ ‍Yellow ‍ Precipitation: 0.0mm

Forecasted High: 21ºC Weather Outlook: Mainly sunny with chance of showers (1-3mm)

Today started as a lovely sunny day. It warmed up quickly, as well. In the distance, mid-morning the skies started to appear dark and cloudy. It looked like it was going to rain, and there were moments of sprinkles throughout the afternoon, but nothing beyond that. It was cool and windy in the evening.

October 9

Daily High: 16.4ºC ‍ Daily Low: 8.2ºC ‍ Average Temperature: 12.3ºC ‍ Yarn Colour:‍ ‍Gold ‍ Precipitation: 0.0mm

Forecasted High: 16ºC Weather Outlook: Mainly sunny with a chance of showers (~1mm)

Well, today was a lovely, although cooler, sunny day. There was light rain for a few minutes mid-morning, but it didn’t amount to enough to record. The wind picked up again, but nothing like the other day.

October 10

Daily High: 12.1ºC ‍ Daily Low: 3.2ºC ‍ Average Temperature: 7.6ºC ‍ Yarn Colour:‍ ‍Fern ‍ Precipitation: 0.0mm

Forecasted High: 11ºC Weather Outlook: Sunny

It was a cool and windy start to the day. Gusts, at times, reached 52km/h. Despite the cooler temperatures, it was a sunny day, and it ended up being a degree warmer than forecasted.

A frost advisory was issued for overnight tonight.

October 11

Daily High: 13.5ºC ‍ Daily Low: 1.6ºC ‍ Average Temperature: 7.5ºC ‍ Yarn Colour:‍ ‍Fern ‍ Precipitation: 0.0mm

Forecasted High: 14ºC Weather Outlook: A mix of sun and clouds

It was cold but beautiful at the Marsh this morning. The water level was lower than last week, but there was water in the pond.

As the day progressed, it felt like it warmed up. In the afternoon, there were moments when I thought it could rain, but none fell that I’m aware of.

October 12

Daily High: 14.6ºC ‍ Daily Low: 5.3ºC ‍ Average Temperature: 10ºC ‍ Yarn Colour:‍ ‍Fern ‍ Precipitation: 1.9mm

Forecasted High: 17ºC Weather Outlook: Rain in the morning (~5mm), followed by a chance of showers

It had been raining off and on by the time I got up this morning. The rain seemed to taper off around mid-morning, but it remained cloudy with some sunny breaks throughout the afternoon. A little bit of drizzle fell throughout the day and into the evening. The wind picked up later in the day, but only registered as having gusts of 41km/h.

October 13

Daily High: 10.2ºC ‍ Daily Low: 2.4ºC ‍ Average Temperature: 6.3ºC ‍ Yarn Colour:‍ ‍Jade ‍ Precipitation: 3.9mm

Forecasted High: 10ºC Weather Outlook: Cloudy with sunny breaks, rain overnight (up to 10mm)

It was a cold start to the day. It stayed cool throughout the day, and by evening it smelled like there was snow in the air. There’s no snow in the forecast, but there is quite a bit of rain overnight and tomorrow, so we’ll see. I love toy shovel, but October feels too early. There was some sun in the afternoon, but it was mainly a cloudy day. It was just starting to rain when I was getting ready for bed.

October 14

Daily High: 13.5ºC ‍ Daily Low: 6.5ºC ‍ Average Temperature: 10ºC ‍ Yarn Colour:‍ ‍Fern ‍ Precipitation: 9.8mm

Forecasted High: 17ºC Weather Outlook: Rain (up to 20mm)

It was a rainy old day today, though much to my surprise it didn’t record a lot of rainfall. It also felt much warmer than 13.5ºC, even when taking the humidity into account. This fall feels unusually cold. The rain was heavier in the morning than the rest of the day. But it persisted, even in drizzle form, well into the evening.

October 15

Daily High: 11.8ºC ‍ Daily Low: 1.9ºC ‍ Average Temperature: 6.8ºC ‍ Yarn Colour:‍ ‍Jade ‍ Precipitation: 0.0mm

Forecasted High: 11ºC Weather Outlook: Mainly sunny

Today was a tough day. I don’t know if I really clocked what the weather was. I know it was cool and it didn’t rain, though!

October 16

Daily High: 15.8ºC ‍ Daily Low: 0.7ºC ‍ Average Temperature: 8.3ºC ‍ Yarn Colour:‍ ‍Fern ‍ Precipitation: 11.8mm

Forecasted High: 9ºC Weather Outlook: Rain (up to 20mm)

Today had a little bit of everything. There was some sun, then it was overcast, and then rain. There were some heavy bursts of rain late afternoon and throughout the evening - all of which occurred during dog walks, I think! It was also much warmer than forecasted, but the dampness from this week’s rain and cooler temperatures didn’t really let you feel that warmth.

October 17

Daily High: 15.4ºC ‍ Daily Low: -1.0ºC ‍ Average Temperature: 7.2ºC ‍ Yarn Colour:‍ ‍Jade ‍ Precipitation: 0mm

Forecasted High: 8ºC Weather Outlook: Mainly cloudy, with rain in the morning (up to 3mm)

Today was the second day in a row where the daily high was nearly double the forecasted temperature. It was a nice day, though it felt colder than it was. There was light rain in the morning, but not significant enough to be recorded in the data. The evening was also cool, with the clearest skies. I wish I had taken a photo - the stars were absolutely vibrant.

October 18

Daily High: 9ºC ‍ Daily Low: -1.9ºC ‍ Avg Temperature: 3.5ºC ‍ Yarn Colour:‍ ‍Light Green ‍ Precipitation: 0.0mm

Forecasted High: 8ºC Weather Outlook: Sunny

A beautiful, but cold morning! The Marsh retained quite a bit of water from this week’s rain, which is great. Lots of birds were hanging around, which is always a lovely sound first thing in the morning. The ground had also been dusted with frost from the colder overnight temperatures.

The rest of the day remained cool, but sunny. The evening had beautiful, clear skies, which is always the best way to end the day.

October 19

Daily High: 13.1ºC ‍ Daily Low: -1.3ºC ‍ Average Temperature: 5.9ºC ‍ Yarn Colour:‍ ‍Jade ‍ Precipitation: 0.0mm

Forecasted High: 13ºC Weather Outlook: Mainly sunny

It was remarkably cold walking Carson this morning. It’s the first time since early spring I regretted not wearing a hat and mitts. I guess it’s time to bust those out! The good news, is that it became much sunnier and warmer as the day went on. Even though the highest temperature of the day was recorded at 13.1ºC, it showed 17ºC in areas hit by direct sunlight.

Unrelated to the weather, today was the vote to determine if there should be a vote for Alberta to separate from Canada. Note: it did not pass, as expected.

October 20

Daily High: 14.9ºC ‍ Daily Low: 2.0ºC ‍ Average Temperature: 8.5ºC ‍ Yarn Colour:‍ ‍Fern ‍ Precipitation: 0.0mm

Forecasted High: 14ºC Weather Outlook: Mix of sun and clouds

Cold morning and evening. It was a beautiful and sunny day in the afternoon, though. I have a busier work week this week, so I took Carson to for a Marsh walk at 3pm. I quickly learned that I had too many layers! But it was lovely. We did not take any photos while we were here - it was just a nice autumn walk.

October 21

Daily High: 13.3ºC ‍ Daily Low: 1.5ºC ‍ Average Temperature: 7.4ºC ‍ Yarn Colour:‍ ‍Jade ‍ Precipitation: 0.0mm

Forecasted High: 13ºC Weather Outlook: Mix of sun and clouds

While I wasn’t in Kentville for most of the day, I do know it was cold in the morning, and quite cool in the evening. The little I was around in the day, it was a beautiful sunny day. There were clear skies from morning to night it seems.

October 22

Daily High: 9.9ºC ‍ Daily Low: 4.7ºC ‍ Average Temperature: 7.3ºC ‍ Yarn Colour:‍ ‍Jade ‍ Precipitation: 1.5mm

Forecasted High: 10ºC Weather Outlook: Scattered showers throughout the day (up to 2mm)

Well, today was a rainy day in the Valley! There was a mix of rain and overcast skies in the short amount of time I was in Kentville today. The rain cleared up later in the afternoon, but then the wind picked up and remained throughout the night.

But today was especially odd, because a tropical storm, Josephine, formed off the coast of Nova Scotia. No one was expecting that, but it did explain the sudden high winds. I found out by accident when looking at rain forecasts for this evening. One of the reasons it came as a shock was that it was the result of a separate system merging with a Nor’easter.

October 23

Daily High: 7.8ºC ‍ Daily Low: 3.3ºC ‍ Average Temperature: 5.5ºC ‍ Yarn Colour:‍ ‍Jade ‍ Precipitation: 0.0mm

Forecasted High: 8ºC Weather Outlook: Cloudy with showers

I was gone for most of the day again today, but it seemed to remain overcast and windy. There were some occasional sunny breaks, which were nice. Overall, it was a very windy day as the remnants of Josephine left the region, and dissipated. She was a short-lived tropical storm!

October 24

Daily High: 9.6ºC ‍ Daily Low: 1.7ºC ‍ Average Temperature: 5.7ºC ‍ Yarn Colour:‍ ‍Jade ‍ Precipitation: 0.0mm

Forecasted High: 9ºC Weather Outlook: Mainly sunny

It was so nice to not have to venture too far today! It felt much warmer than it was and the sun was a big part of that. Like most days recently, today had a cold start and end. Today was the first day that I thought about turning the heat on in the house. It’s still warm enough to keep it off, but it is getting closer to “the big day!”

Unrelated to Kentville’s weather, BC elected its first conservative government in almost 100 years. But thankfully, Brazil chose the candidate who values the environment.

October 25

Daily High: 17.4ºC ‍ Daily Low: 0.9ºC ‍ Average Temperature: 9.1ºC ‍ Yarn Colour:‍ ‍Fern ‍ Precipitation: 0.0mm

Forecasted High: 15ºC Weather Outlook: Sunny

It was a very cold start to the day - brrr! But the Marsh was beautiful (and quiet, aside from the wildlife!). The leaves are starting to dull, but there is ample water in the pond. It is still not back to the way it was, but it’s better than past weeks have been.

The afternoon was warmer than the forecast, for the first time in a few days. The warm sun felt so good, before it seemed to quickly cool off in the evening.

October 26

Daily High: 18.2ºC ‍ Daily Low: 2.5ºC ‍ Average Temperature: 10.3ºC ‍ Yarn Colour:‍ ‍Fern ‍ Precipitation: 0.0mm

Forecasted High: 16ºC Weather Outlook: Mainly sunny

It was so cold this morning! It was supposed to be 8ºC overnight, but at 6am it was 3ºC. I can already see this is the coldest October of the decade.

Now, that being said, it warmed up quite a bit, and by late morning, it was a warm, sunny day! IT remained this way until the sun started to set. It looks like the next couple of days will be colder, before this warm weather reappears later in the week!

October 27

Daily High: 8ºC ‍ Daily Low: 0ºC ‍ Average Temperature: 4ºC ‍ Yarn Colour:‍ ‍Light Green ‍ Precipitation: 0.0mm

Forecasted High: 7ºC Weather Outlook: Sunny

It looked like it was going to be really cold this morning, but it actually wasn’t too bad. The same thing happened last night!

October 28

Daily High: 8.6ºC ‍ Daily Low: -2.3ºC Avg Temperature: 3.2ºC ‍ Yarn Colour:‍ ‍Light Green Precipitation: 0.0mm

Forecasted High: 7ºC Weather Outlook: Sunny

It was a cold day, but it actually didn’t feel so cold as the day went on. It certainly wasn’t two days ago warm, but it was definitely comfortable with a sweater on. It’s been nice to see the sun! The morning and evening have continued the trend of being cold, and that’s okay.

October 29

Daily High: 18.3ºC ‍ Daily Low: 0.2ºC ‍ Average Temperature: 9.2ºC ‍ Yarn Colour:‍ ‍Fern ‍ Precipitation: 0.0mm

Forecasted High: 16ºC Weather Outlook: Mainly sunny

It was a lovely, mild sunny autumn day today. A cold start, that quickly warmed up and stayed for the remainder of the day and evening! It was almost enough to make one thing we were entering spring…

October 30

Daily High: 17ºC ‍ Daily Low: 7.9ºC ‍ Average Temperature: 12.4ºC ‍ Yarn Colour:‍ ‍Gold ‍ Precipitation: 3.6mm

Forecasted High: 16ºC Weather Outlook: Rain (up to 10mm)

It was a near perfect day, today. It was a mild morning with a bit of rain (after wed returned from our morning walk!). Then around noon, the sun came out and that sunshine made everything feel wonderful. It remained clear skies and sunny until it set. Then it started to cloud over, though it remained mild. A great penultimate day of October.

October 31

Daily High: 7.2ºC ‍ Daily Low: 0.4ºC ‍ Average Temperature: 4.2ºC ‍ Yarn Colour:‍ ‍ ‍ Precipitation: 0.0mm

Forecasted High: 6ºC Weather Outlook: A mix of sun and clouds

Happy Halloween! It was a cool, but dry day for kids to be out trick or treating. I think someone may have actually come to my house this year!

The actual day started off quite cool, but ended up being a lovely sunny day. It felt a lot warmer than forecast (and even what the daily high is noting). There was a bit of wind though. All in all, it was a great day to end off October!

Overnight tonight the time changes to Daylight Savings. Tomorrow should be a fun day for parents…

Month Summary

Highest: 26.2ºC Lowest: -2.3ºC Avg Temperature: 9.0ºC Yarn Colour:‍ ‍Fern Total Precipitation: 43.6mm

October brought a noticeable shift toward cooler autumn weather, with temperatures fluctuating quite a bit throughout the month. The first few days were unusually warm for fall, with temperatures reaching 26.2°C on October 2, but things cooled considerably as the month progressed. There were several cold mornings, frost advisories, and overnight temperatures dipping below freezing toward the end of the month. Despite the colder trend, there were still some surprisingly mild, sunny days, including October 25, 26, 29 and 30. Overall, the average temperature for October was 9.0°C, with a high of 26.2°C and a low of -2.3°C. The month also brought 43.6 mm of precipitation, including several rainy days in the middle of the month. A particularly unusual weather event was the formation of Tropical Storm Josephine off the coast of Nova Scotia on October 22, which brought strong winds and rain to the region.

There were also some noticeable environmental observations throughout the month. Morning and evening fog became more frequent early in October, while changing temperatures brought the first frost and signs of the approaching winter. Rainfall helped restore some water to the Marsh, where pond levels had been noticeably low in previous weeks, although water levels continued to fluctuate. Overall, it felt like an unusually cold fall and from past (recent) data, this was the coldest October of the decade.

*Note: All temperature and precipitation data comes from Environment Canada’s Kentville weather station.
