Each day of the month, I record my weather observations, and track various happenings. I also share a weekly marsh update, which captures the water levels in one of the ponds found in Miners Marsh.
August 1

It’s a new month! And it kicked off with a bit of drizzle in the morning, and then turning sunny in the afternoon and into the evening. Once the sun came out, it was hot without shade. But there was a little breeze to help. The forecast for the day was 22ºC, which is exactly what we experienced.
Unrelated to the weather, today was the Avon River Arts Unframed event in Poplar Grove. It was a wonderful day sitting under an apple tree and knitting. I even gave a short talk about my project.
August 2

This morning warmed up quickly! It was hot and humid before 9am. The day remained sunny-cloudy, until later afternoon, when it began to rain. The rain was heavy at times, and enough to issue a thunderstorm warning. It looked like there were a few strikes around, but not close enough or in great quantity to notice. The evening was humid, but clear skies. Overall, temperatures ended up being above the forecasted 27ºC, but we did recieve a few showers
For my weekly visit to Miners Marsh, the pond had a lot more water in it this morning. This is a positive sign, even though the water doesn’t look great - it’s nice to see it sticking around after a couple of days of steady rain.
August 3

Being outside today felt like being a snowman in summer. The humidity was intense, which made it so much warmer than it needed to be. It was a sunny day, despite the forecast suggesting mostly cloudy with a risk of a thunderstorm in the afternoon and evening. The forecasted high was off by two degrees (on the cooler side). A breeze kicked in later afternoon, and stayed throughout the evening. This was the warmest day we’ve had in almost a month!
This is a screen grab from 9:06PM. These temperatures are far hotter than I am comfortable with at any point of the day, but least of all this late in the evening.
August 4

I forgot to write the recap for this day, and it’s amazing what a good night’s rest will erase. Whoops! It was a sunny day though, as predicted. It was also quite windy throughout the day.
In the afternoon, a heat warning was issued for the rest of the week and possibly into the weekend. Looks like I won’t be straying too far for the next while.
August 5

Kicking off the heatwave with a warm morning, that had a refreshing breeze early on. It continued to get warmer and warmer as the day went on, which wasn’t helped by the clear blue skies and direct sunlight. The day was exactly as the forecast suggested. Thankfully that breeze stuck around all day, giving some relief outside of the shade.
August 6

A much hotter day than yesterday! At least, in how it felt. The morning felt cooler than the actual temperature (I almost could have used a light sweater to walk my dog this morning!). Not as much of a breeze, which really amplified the heat that showed up mid-morning.
There were also several power outages throughout the day across the Valley. I lost mine around 5pm due to trees on the lines. I was almost disappointed to have to leave the house shortly after it went out, as an evening with forced no screen time would have been lovely. Maybe next time…
August 7

Everything was hot today - and it was obvious by engaging with others, that everyone is feeling it. It was supposed to be the final day of the heatwave, but this afternoon, it was renewed for the weekend. We shall see. It is supposed to rain tomorrow, so hopefully that will give some reprieve, while watering the soil.
An interesting observation is that today was the hottest of the past three (in terms of daily high), but had the lowest average temperature because the overnight temperatures were cooler. My current project displays average daily temperature, so often the true intensity (hot or cold) is not fully captured. Someday I will find. different way to show those extremes.
August 8

Today must have been the highest humidity day we’ve had in a long time. It was so muggy my glasses fogged up every time I went outside!
While it was a humid day, it was cooler (real temperature) than the past few days AND we even had some rain. In the afternoon, we were treated to a few thundershowers. Nothing major, but I do love a thunderstorm. This was also the first thunderstorm we’ve had with Carson. He seemed intrigued, but not scared. Thank goodness!
August 9

Another day of a hot and humid heatwave. It’s hard to be motivated on days like this! The forecast called for thunderstorms in addition to a muggy day and that’s exactly what it was. There was a little relief in the evening with minimal breeze, but not much else outside of that.
The heatwave was renewed again until tomorrow evening. Let’s hope they’re right!
Despite a lot of mosquitoes, I was able to snap a quick photo of a much more hydrated Miners Marsh. It’s amazing to think how dry it was just a few weeks ago, even with a little bit of rain. Love to see a little more life come back to this special place.
August 10

A cool morning started the day. Of course I’m not sure if it was actually cool or it was just a noticeable difference from yesterday. It did warm up as the day progressed, but it was cooler than the last few days. The evening also had a nice breeze, which helped.
The heat warning was also called off in the early evening. Here’s hoping it stays that way for a while.
August 11

Today was three degrees warmer than forecast. But we were also supposed to have a cloudy, with a risk of thundershowers and that didn’t happen either. Instead it was humid and sunny. I have, however really been enjoying the cooler mornings.
August 12

It was a beautiful sunny day. It started out cool again in the morning, and quickly warmed up once the sun was in full force. It stayed pretty warm with only a slight breeze in the evening. VERY buggy this evening. While I appreciate that they are around, I don’t want to feel them on my person. heehee
August 13

24, feels like 29; possibility of rain (10mm)
Today started like the last few - cool in the morning, quickly warming up as the sun came into full view. But shortly after one, things suddenly shifted and before long a thunderstorm came rolling through! Then came the rain! It called for up to 10mm, but we received just a little more than double. By dinner time, it was back to muggy and blue skies until the sun set. Not a bad day!
Side note: someone didn’t care too much about the thunder… Carson looked up when the first crack was heard, and then immediately settled back down. I’m not complaining!
August 14

A cool, misty morning from the rain and thunder overnight. The sun slowly came out and made for a hot sunny day until about 4:30PM when another thundershowers rolled through.
August 15

Today was just a sunny day. No thunderstorms, no rain. It did seem to cool off in the evening, which was nice for some yard work.
August 16

Another sunny day, but it felt much cooler. This evening especially, while buggy, was almost fall-like. Of course no complaints from this winter-loving gal, but it felt unseasonably cool, which isn’t cool at all.
The Marsh was surprisingly quiet this morning. We went a little later than usual (at peak morning dog time), and were the only ones there. The pond is filling in nicely, retaining quite a bit of the water from recent rains!
August 17

I don’t believe we received the forecasted showers yesterday, but it was a mix of sun and clouds. That made for a muggy day! In the morning, I thought I should have worn a sweater to walk Carson, but that didn’t last long - it warmed up within an hour or two. It was much hotter than expected though. The forecast suggested a high of 21. That’s a difference of 4 degrees!
August 18

Another cool start to the day that quickly warmed up. But today, that warm was more muggy! It was a little bit hotter than expected, though less so than yesterday. It remaining humid all day and well into the night. it was another foggy glasses day.
There was rain in the forecast, but nothing was registered. There were a few sprinkles here and there, but clearly not enough to register any sort of accumulation. Around 10pm, a thunderstorm warning was issued, but I did not hear anything, and assume the lack of rain means nothing happened.
August 19

There’s only one word to describe today: ugh. Yesterday’s mugginess was still in full effect this morning and well into the afternoon. It felt heavy. Later in the afternoon, the sun made an appearance, which caused it to warm up by 2 degrees warmer than the forecast suggested. Not a great day to not enjoy being warm!
August 20

While the heaviness in the air may have disappeared today, it was still very hot and humid throughout the day. It was two degrees warmer than the forecast predicted, and the chance of showers did not produce. I did get to spend the afternoon in the hot sun on a field visit for my work, which was both really fun and really hot. It was registering as 31ºC in some spots, but not where the temperature is recorded for the purposes of my project. Needless to say, it was another hot one!
August 21

It looked like there was some rain early in the morning (pre-630am), as the car had evidence of droplets from not long before. But no precipitation was recorded. The rest of the day was pretty much as anticipated - mainly sunny, and hot and humid!
Looks like the weekend could be quite wet, which will be welcomed after such a dry and hot week.
August 22

24 feels like 29, cloudy with sunny breaks, turning to rain late evening.
Today started out sunny and warming in the morning (19ºC by 9am). But as the afternoon went on, it started to become darker and darker. It started to lightly rain around 7 or 8pm.
I opted to go to the Marsh today to snap the weekly photo even though it’s a day early. We are expected a lot of rain starting tonight, and didn’t think it was wise to head down tomorrow. It was much drier than the last few weeks, which isn’t much of a surprise given the lack of precipitation. I bet it will be filled tomorrow!
August 23

I’m glad past me was thinking about future me today, because it was a rainy ‘ol morning and the Marsh in torrential rain wouldn’t have been very enjoyable - even as someone who loves walking in the rain.
Overall, there wasn’t as much rain as expected. We only received about 1/3 of the expected up to 35mm forecast. It was a pretty gloomy day and the air was thick. Not a great feeling if you had to be outdoors. It was also about two degrees warmer than the forecast suggested.
August 24

Another day of actual temperatures being higher than expected. Today was two degrees warmer than the forecast, and the humidity made it feel unbearable at times. A thunderstorm warning was issued around 4pm, and there were rumbles around 6pm. Soon after the rain came fast and furious, and it was such a glorious feeling! I was in the grocery store when the rain began and I skipped back to my car. Love a little childhood-rain nostalgia!
Outside of that, the day was sunny and overcast. Gosh I long for late fall…
August 25

Today was another hot and humid day. At 12:30pm, a severe thunderstorm watch was issued for Kentville. Shortly after 2pm, I could hear some rumblings in the distance and at 2:30pm, the watch was upgraded to a warning. We had a quick downpour about that time, as well. Interestingly, I didn’t hear anything after that warning went out. Other than that, there wasn’t much to note. It was sunny and warm. It was about 2.5degrees warmer than the forecasted daily high.
August 26

A cool morning and evening, with a warm sunny day in the middle. There isn’t much to report about today. It was 1.5 degrees warmer than the forecasted high. There were also no thunderstorms, despite a risk that they could make another appearance.
August 27

I was out of the area today, so I didn’t get to experience the day in full. But both the morning and evening were refreshingly cool! The little bit of daytime I was able to experience was sunny. And, for the first time in a few days the forecast was right on the mark!
August 28

Today called for a potential thunderstorm and maybe a little bit of rain later on in the day. Neither of those made their way to Kentville. But there were a few times where some dark clouds looked like they were approaching. What it ended up being was a lovely sunny day. Like yesterday, the morning and evening were cool, which is welcomed. Fall is certainly in the air!
August 29

Today was exactly as forecasted - cooler temperatures with a blue, sunny sky. It was noticeably cooler, but weirdly still felt hot? The morning and evening were refreshing and cool. It was lovely! It is soon time to bring out a sweater for morning walks.
August 30

24 feels like 27; mainly sunny
Although it was a few degrees warmer today, it still felt cool. The colder morning and evening trend continued, as well. Later in the evening we received a little bit of rain, which was nice.
My attempt to capture the weekly marsh photo was blocked… I’m not sure why the path was barricaded, and I can’t find anything that clarifies. Regardless, the Marsh looked lush and green, overall. Hopefully we’ll be able to resume regular tracking next week.
August 31

20, feels like 21; mainly sunny
There was a little bit of rain overnight, most of which was recorded in yesterday’s summary. It was noticeably cooler all day, though, which was wonderful. This morning I remembered to put a sweater on before heading out for a walk. It was brisk! Even when the sun came into full force, it was still cool. It was the perfect fall day, just three weeks short of the calendar start of fall!
And what a magnificent way to end the month - a spectacular sunset!
Month Summary

This month started out quite hot, and ended with an obvious shift in the seasons. While the last couple of months were dry, August felt like more rain found us. There were also numerous thunderstorms and days with thunderstorm warnings. But with only 56.6mm of rain, and almost half of that in one weather event, it actually wasn’t as wet as most people think it was. Everything is still pretty dry. Compared to last year, though, what a difference!
August also had a lot of high humid, hurts to breath days. The sun it hard! It was a beautiful month, especially for folks who enjoy the summer months.
